CONDUCTING EFFECTIVE PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL DISCUSSIONS THAT GET RESULTS!

The performance appraisal discussion should be one of the most important conversations that occurs between supervisor and employee. All too often, the result is frustration and de motivation. Participants in this interactive learning session will gain an understanding of how to conduct performance appraisals that will benefit the employee, the supervisor and the organization.

  • Setting performance standards and expectations and communicating them to employees.
  • Applying the rating scale used in the performance appraisal form and interpreting rating factors to specific, job related performance issues

CONFLICT RESOLUTION

It's important for supervisors to be able to handle conflict. The course builds on the theme that conflict is a part of doing business and that each employee must be able to handle conflict in a positive manner.

  • Group work: participants in small teams will identify what creates conflict within the organization.
  • Self-assessment: participants will assess their skills at handling conflict.
  • Strengths/weaknesses: participants will identify their strengths and weaknesses in handling conflict.
  • Incident review: participants will review a recent conflict. They will describe the positive and negative results of the incident.
  • Positive/negative conflict: participants will learn the difference between these two conflicts.
  • Five steps to resolving conflict: participants will learn the proper technique for dealing with conflict - take responsibility, uncover the real problem, ask questions and listen, develop goals/action plan and follow up.
  • Communication skill building: participants will learn the skill of using "I" messages in dealing with conflict.
  • Modes of dealing with conflict: participants will learn that they have to use different methods of dealing with conflict-competing, accommodating, avoiding, collaborating and compromising.
  • Group work: participants will be asked to identify a current conflict and use the five-step process to determine how they will address the conflict. They will pair up in the class and review each other's plan. They will critique the plan and make suggested improvements.

It has been estimated that 10 to 25% of employees are sometimes on the job under the influence of alcohol or some illicit drug. This program is for HR Managers, Safety Directors, supervisors and all managers who want to have an understanding of the behavioral warning signs and symptoms of employee substance abuse and how to deal with an employee who is exhibiting suspicious behavior. (This program meets DOT requirements.)

  • Identify the warning signs of substance abuse.
  • Know the affects that substance abuse has on individuals.
  • Establish objective criteria for making a "reasonable suspicion" determination.
  • Learn techniques for confronting an employee who exhibits warning signs of substance abuse.
  • Understand the issues surrounding substance abuse under the ADA.

  • Session 5: Appraisals that Develop Performance
    A strong, objective performance appraisal system is an important employee development tool. Integrating job-related behavioral and technical competencies keeps performance discussions focused on factors that achieve results for the organization and help the employee achieve higher levels of performance and career success.
